The Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN) is in celebratory mood. Reason: The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has renewed its operating license as a Collective Management Organisation (CMO), with effect from January 1, 2025.

In a letter with reference no. NCC/ADM./364/T/256 and dated January 16, 2025, the renewal was conveyed to the organisation thus: “The Nigerian Copyright Commission has approved the renewal of the license of the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (Ltd/Gte), to operate as a Collective Management Organization in respect of rights in musical works and sound recording. This renewal is with effect from 1st January, 2025.”

The letter further states, “Please note that the renewal is subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act 2022, and the Copyright (Collective Management Organizations) Regulations 2007.”

Meanwhile, in another letter with reference no. NCC/ADM.364/T/22 and dated December 12, 2024, the commission commended MCSN for its performance, particularly in the area of “collection of licensing fees for the use of works in your repertoire.”

The regulator, however, urged the collecting society to continue to build on its achievements, for the benefit of its members and affiliates, and in line with global best practices.
