A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Enugu State, Dr SKC Ogbonnia, has resigned his membership of the party, citing what he described as failed governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ogbonnia, in a resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman of Owelli/Amoli/Ugbo/Ogugu Ward in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, accused the President of presiding over a government that has plunged Nigeria into insecurity, poverty and foreign military interference.

The letter, which was copied to all tiers of the party from the ward to the national level, was accompanied by his APC membership card for “necessary action”.

He said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family and political associates, as well as deep reflection on the prevailing political realities in Nigeria and within the APC.

Ogbonnia recalled that he joined the APC as a founding member with high hopes for positive change, national progress and development, but said recent events and the party’s trajectory had made continued membership “untenable and unbearable”.

In the letter, he accused the Tinubu-led administration of failing to address critical national challenges.

“Specifically, the leadership of the party under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has failed to address critical issues such as insecurity, poverty and unemployment, which directly impact the future of our people, especially the teeming youth population,” he stated.

He also listed several reasons for his resignation, including lack of internal party democracy, which he said manifested in the imposition of leaders, marginalisation of loyal members, vendetta politics and acute nepotism that stifle participation and growth within the party.

Ogbonnia further alleged that the APC is pursuing a one-party state by deploying underhand tactics to suppress opposition parties.

On youth inclusion, he lamented what he described as the glaring absence of young people in key federal appointments, which he said signalled a disregard for Nigeria’s future generation.

He also accused President Tinubu of being indifferent to worsening security challenges, claiming this had compromised Nigeria’s sovereignty and exposed the country to neocolonial foreign military intervention.

“Tinubu’s inhumane leadership and nonchalance in the face of severe security challenges ravaging the country have made Nigeria vulnerable to foreign military interventions,” he said.

Ogbonnia strongly criticised what he described as plans to endorse President Tinubu for a second term in 2027, calling it “a gross insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians”.

According to him, the President has failed in most critical areas of national development and has become “irredeemable”.

He further alleged that Tinubu has lost the confidence of Nigerians and is increasingly isolated internationally, particularly among key allies such as the United States.

“These issues, among many others, have convinced me that the APC, in its current state, does not serve the best interests of my community or Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

“I can no longer align myself with a political path that undermines the principles of true democracy and good governance that Nigerians deserve.”

Ogbonnia thanked party leaders at all levels for the opportunity and support he received when he sought the APC presidential ticket during the 2019 electoral cycle, and wished the party well in its future endeavours.
