Former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Mr Udengs Eradiri, has urged the Federal Government to be more deliberate about revamping the nation’s refineries.

Eradiri who made the call in a statement to newsmen on Monday in Yenagoa, said that savings from fuel subsidy removal should be used to rehabilitate government-owned refineries

He further said that there was need to review the economic reform strategy of the current administration.

“The rehabilitation and full operation of government-owned refineries should be an immediate priority for the Federal Government.

“Increased domestic refining capacity will boost fuel supply, reduce petrol prices and trigger a corresponding reduction in the cost of goods and services,” he said.

According to him, a well-planned and sincere rehabilitation of the refineries would go a long way to strengthen the economy and improve citizens welfare.

Eradiri also expressed his refection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s call for the reintroduction of fuel subsidy, saying that the policy failed to achieve intended objectives.

“I disagree with the former vice president, the intended objective of fuel subsidy was not achieved, it failed to bring succour to the people.

“Instead of reintroducing subsidy, the Federal Government should invest savings from its removal in projects that will reduce cost of living,” he said.
