The campaign organisation of former Inspector-General of Police and Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship hopeful in Nasarawa State, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (retd), has declared that it will not be drawn into a war of words ahead of the 2027 election, insisting that its campaign will be defined by issues, policies and solutions to the challenges confronting the state.
The campaign organisation stated this in response to a recent statement attributed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, saying Adamu would rather place his record, experience and policy agenda before the electorate than engage political opponents in personal attacks.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Otaru Douglas, Director of Media and Strategic Communications of the IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu Campaign Organisation, the former police chief was described as a politician who would rather engage opponents on their records, policies and plans for Nasarawa State than descend into personal attacks.
Douglas said Adamu remained committed to presenting his vision for the state and would not allow provocative political statements to shift attention from issues affecting the people.
“His Excellency, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (retd) is too decent, too accomplished and too statesmanlike to engage in a campaign of calumny with any opponent,” he said.
According to him, the campaign organisation would concentrate on taking Adamu’s experience, leadership credentials and policy agenda to voters across the state as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 election.
He said the campaign would place particular emphasis on security, youth employment, economic development, education, infrastructure and inclusive governance.
“Our campaign shall be anchored on issues and progressive ideas on how to improve the lives of the people of Nasarawa State,” Douglas said.
He maintained that the electorate deserved a campaign that allowed candidates to explain what they intended to do differently if elected, rather than one dominated by accusations, name-calling and personal exchanges.
The campaign organisation also called on supporters of Adamu and the SDP across the state’s 13 local government areas to avoid retaliatory attacks and remain focused on the campaign’s message.
“We call on our supporters across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to remain calm, focused and law-abiding. Do not respond to insults with insults,” Douglas said.
He said the campaign would not be distracted by statements it considered provocative, insisting that the focus should remain on the challenges confronting residents and the competing solutions being offered by the various political camps.
On the reported use of the word “sack” by the APC governorship candidate, Douglas said the Adamu campaign would not engage in a war of words over the expression.
“The so-called ‘sack’ statement from the APC candidate is a political statement which we believe should not distract attention from the issues that matter to the people,” he said.
Rather than trading accusations, he said the Adamu campaign would challenge political opponents to present their records, programmes and plans to the electorate and allow voters to make their choice.
Douglas further urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to maintain civility as the 2027 contest approaches, warning that inflammatory rhetoric could divert public attention from the issues that should define the election.
He said the people of Nasarawa State were interested in questions of security, jobs, education, infrastructure, economic opportunities and accountable governance, adding that these should occupy the centre of political discussions.
“We are on a rescue mission to Nasarawa State, and nothing will distract us,” Douglas added.
