Ex-Falcons laud NFF over prompt payment of AFCON appearance fee

Former Super Falcons players, under the aegis of United Ex-Super Falcons Worldwide, have commended the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for promptly settling 30 percent of the $1 million (approximately ₦1.5 billion) prize money for winning the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, in July.

In a press statement issued on behalf of the group from her United States-base, yesterday, Patience Avre-Odeli applauded the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for the prompt payment of the agreed percentage from the prize money remited to the federation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), barely one month after the Super Falcons won the 10th WAFCON title by defeating host nation Morocco 3-2 in a the final. 

Said she: “We, the members of United Ex-Super Falcons (Worldwide), are very happy with the present leadership of NFF for promptly paying the 10th WAFCON title-winning team in a record time.  This is a step in the right direction and a trend we would like to continue in the years ahead.”

The former Super Falcons attacker, who won two WAFCON titles in her active years, urged the Gusau-led NFF board to sustain the current tempo of paying the Super Falcons as and when due, pointing out that it is the best way to maintain harmony in the team.

The former Princess Jegede Babes, Lagos and Ufuoma Babes FC of Warri attacker, whose generation was the first Super Falcons team to win the WAFCON trophy in 1998 and, also, qualify Nigeria for the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in United States in1999.

, said although it was unfortunate that the past NFF leadership and the federal government failed to compensate them during their time, they are happy with the huge financial rewards the current generation of Super Falcons are receiving from the federation, the government and corporate bodies.
