Former Director of Defence Information and retired military strategist, Major General John Enenche, has added a new feather to his cap with the successful completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Leadership and Strategic Studies.

The academic milestone was confirmed on July 14, 2025, when the retired general defended his doctoral thesis at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.

Enenche’s research work, titled “Military Management and National Security in Nigeria: A Case Study of the Nigerian Army, 2010 to 2024”, critically examined the evolution of leadership, operational challenges, and institutional reforms within the Nigerian Army over a 14-year period.

Widely respected for his tenure as Defence Spokesman and later as the pioneer Coordinator of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Enenche is best remembered for his calm and fact-driven media briefings during critical periods of Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking at the defence, his supervisor, Professor Adam Okene Ahmed, commended the quality of his research, referring to him as “General Doctor Enenche John Enenche,” a title the retired officer humbly accepted.

Enenche, who holds earlier degrees in Geology and Strategic Studies from the University of Jos and the University of Ibadan respectively, said the new academic achievement is not a departure from his life of service but a continuation of it in another form.

Born in Benue State, his career spanned nearly three decades in the Nigerian Army, including United Nations peacekeeping assignments and service as Commandant of the Nigerian Army War College.

By earning a doctorate after retirement, Maj. Gen. Enenche has become a symbol of continuous national relevance, joining a growing circle of military veterans who transition into academia to influence policy and development through research and thought leadership.

He noted during his remarks, “The ‘General’ came first after 29 years. The ‘Doctor’ came next after nearly four years. In the order of seniority, let us respect that sequence.”

With this academic milestone, Maj. Gen. Enenche (Rtd) now joins Nigeria’s intellectual ranks, offering insight not only drawn from books but from decades of service at the frontline of national defence and security management.
