Former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, has challenged opposition politicians criticising the cost of living under President Bola Tinubu to offer a more convincing alternative, arguing that public dissatisfaction alone may not decide the 2027 election.
In an interview with Daily Sun, Sani said Tinubu might be unpopular because of economic hardship, but the opposition had yet to show a superior alternative. He questioned why dissatisfaction should be described as peculiar to the North.
He backed the administration’s reforms, agreeing with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, that Nigeria must change an economic orientation built on oil revenue and consumption. Such a change, he said, cannot be painless.
He predicted that Southern votes would divide between Tinubu and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Northern votes among Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Obi, citing zoning and incumbency. He also cited an assessment by The Economist that Tinubu could remain competitive.
Sani predicted that Tinubu would be reelected unless a superior alternative emerges, saying the opposition does little more than lament. He added that Tinubu cannot govern beyond 2031 because power is expected to return to the North.
