Scouts and agents from European clubs are attending the inaugural Peace Cup, a football tournament organised by Dominion Football Club. They are looking for players who can be marketed abroad.
Benjamin James, a former Super Eagles Assistant Coach and Technical Director of Dominion Excellence Academy said teams were brought in from around the country and from outside it, including one from Ghana. “About six scouts are covering the event in batches. Some work for clubs and others are agents. One is from a club in Portugal and another represents a Belgian side. One more scout was due to arrive Saturday night to cover Monday and Tuesday, when the event ends.”
James said organisers set no target number of players. Scouts come with a list of positions their clubs need, and the aim is to find players good enough to be sold on. “We don’t just want to bring people to spend all day here,” he said, adding that scouts are there to assess players and market them in Europe.
Organisers plan a second, larger edition in November during the winter break, with more scouts.
Dominion FC proprietor Mrs. Ogechi Agana said the tournament aims to give young people equal opportunity and exposure, and to keep them productively occupied. “Football is an international game and Nigeria have the talents. Our aim here is to give opportunity to these kids and keep them busy.”she said, and organisers hope to find one or two players ready for the international stage.
