Euro 2024: Switzerland beat holders Italy to reach quarter-finals

Switzerland beat holders Italy to reach quarter-finals

Defending champions Italy were eliminated from Euro 2024 as Switzerland dominated in Berlin, winning 2-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Switzerland impressed in the group stage, only missing out on first place in Group A due to a last-gasp Germany equalizer, and they promptly established control in this last-16 encounter, pinning a poor Italy back and dominating possession.

The initial goal came as no surprise, as Remo Freuler forced his way into the area and blasted past Gianluigi Donnarumma with a tiny deflection.

Italy needed a big comeback after a terrible first half, but they succumbed just 30 seconds into the second half. Nicolo Fagioli threw the ball away and was mercilessly punished, with Ruben Vargas looping a magnificent shot into the net.

The Azzurri came close to regaining control twice, with Fabian Schar headed against his post and Gianluca Scamacca sending an attempt against the woodwork from close range, but a lethargic Italian side did not improve enough.

Switzerland qualified for the Euros quarterfinals for the second time, facing either England or Slovakia next.
