Euro 2024: Ronaldo makes confession after Portugal’s victory over Slovenia

By John Ogunsemore

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo has made a confession after a hard-fought victory against Slovenia at Euro 2024.

Ronaldo was in tears in extra time after missing a penalty awarded when Diogo Jota was brought down in the 18-yard box.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner stepped up to convert his nation’s first spot kick in the ensuing penalty shoot-out and apologised to fans for his earlier miss.

Portugal goalkeeper, Diogo Costa saved three of Slovenia’s penalty kicks to help Portugal reach the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the encounter, Ronaldo, who has 1,266 appearances for club and country, said his sixth Euros will also be his last.

“It is, without doubt, my last European Championship.

“But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by all that football means — by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me.

“It’s not about leaving football, because if I do, what else would I need to do or win?

“It won’t be about getting one more point or one less point. Making people happy is what motivates me the most,” the 39-year-old told O Jogo.
