Euro 2024: Everything you need to know about Spain vs Germany match

Spain and Germany will face off in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinals on Friday, July 5 by 5 pm.

Heavyweights Spain is the only side in the competition with a perfect record, scoring nine goals and allowing one in four consecutive victories, while hosts Germany has scored the most goals (10) in three wins and one draw.

Fans praised Spain’s near-perfect performance, with youthful wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams taking the spotlight.

Yamal, the youngest player to compete in the Euros at 16, and Williams have troubled opposition defenses with their quickness and creativity, while midfielder Fabian Ruiz has guided their game and scored two goals.

Following a surprising group-stage defeat at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Germany is having their greatest international tournament in eight years. They are aiming for their first major championship in a decade, having last won the World Cup in 2014.

Germany’s young offensive midfielder Jamal Musiala is the joint top scorer at Euro 2024, with three goals, while Niclas Fullkrug is second with two.

Germany lost the 2010 World Cup semifinal against Spain and the 2008 Euro final, as well as a 6-0 defeat in the Nations League four years ago.

However, their most recent match in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar resulted in a 1-1 tie in the group stage.

Speaking ahead of the match, Luis de la Fuente, Spain coach said: “It’s going to be an equal game. It could have been the EURO final and I think it’ll be an even game on a footballing level.

“Germany always start matches strongly, so obviously we’ll try and counter that. We’ll try and take the initiative and go all-out from the first minute.”

Also in the same light, Julian Nagelsmann, Germany coach said : “It’s not a final, it’s a quarter-final. We want to be one of the teams in the semi-final.

“Spain want to be champions as well, so it’ll be a tough game. Both teams are good in possession, have good counter-pressing qualities and can put their opponents under pressure.”

The match will be broadcast on GOtv and DStv. On GOtv channel 61, and DStv channels 222 and 225, respectively.
