The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has partnered with Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 to promote sustainable fashion, circular production and green enterprise in the country’s creative industry.
The collaboration will support the Going Green 5 Initiative, a major component of this year’s Nigeria Fashion Week, scheduled to hold under the theme, “Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green & Blue Economy.”
The initiative is expected to promote recycling, upcycling, creative reuse and responsible sourcing as practical measures for reducing waste and extending the lifespan of materials used in fashion production.
A key feature of the programme will be the Going Green Collection, a runway showcase featuring Nigerian and international designers who will create fashion pieces from recycled, upcycled, reclaimed and other environmentally responsible materials.
The organisers said the collection would demonstrate how materials that might otherwise become waste could be transformed through design and innovation into products with creative and commercial value.
Speaking on the partnership, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, said the initiative was part of the EU’s broader cooperation with Nigeria on developing a greener and more circular economy.
Mignot said fashion had become an important part of discussions around sustainable production and consumption, given the size and creativity of Nigeria’s fashion industry.
“The European Union has been working with Nigeria to advance the circular economy, reduce waste and promote more sustainable patterns of production and consumption. Fashion is an important part of this conversation,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria’s fashion industry has significant potential to convert materials that would otherwise become waste into new products, businesses and economic opportunities.
He added that the partnership would take the circular economy conversation directly to designers, entrepreneurs and consumers, stressing the need for sustainability to influence decisions about what is produced, how products are made and what happens to materials after use.

Mignot said promoting recycling, upcycling and responsible production could help reduce the environmental impact of fashion while creating opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and jobs, particularly among young people.
The partnership will also support the Trees for Nigeria Campaign, an environmental initiative of Nigeria Fashion Week. Designers, models, young people, government representatives, development partners, celebrities, guests and international delegates are expected to participate in tree-planting and environmental awareness activities.
Beyond the runway shows, the event will feature discussions on the circular economy, sustainable fashion, green innovation, youth entrepreneurship and responsible production.
Participants, including designers, manufacturers, policymakers, investors, environmental practitioners, development partners and young creatives, are expected to examine practical approaches to sustainability and how environmentally responsible production can contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s fashion industry.
President of Nigeria Fashion Week and President/CEO of Legendary Gold Limited, Lexy Mojo-Eyes, said the partnership would help connect the fashion industry with the sustainability agenda.
Mojo-Eyes said the Going Green 5 Initiative was designed to demonstrate how Nigeria’s creative economy could contribute to environmental responsibility, innovation and sustainable enterprise.
He said the EU partnership would give the initiative an international dimension and strengthen efforts to promote sustainability within the fashion sector.
The three-day Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 programme will feature runway showcases, exhibitions, business engagements, the Nigeria Fashion Entrepreneurs Forum, sustainability activities and the Nigeria Fashion Awards.
The collaboration further places sustainable fashion within wider discussions on green enterprise, entrepreneurship, employment and responsible production and consumption in Nigeria’s expanding creative economy.
