Nigerian rapper Erigga has responded to Davido after the Afrobeats star described him as an “imbecile” during a social media exchange over family wealth and success in the music industry.
Erigga, whose real name is Erhiga Agarivbie, gave his response through his official X handle, days after he sparked the discussion by praising musicians who built their careers without financial backing from wealthy families.
“Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn,” Erigga had written.
Although he did not name any artiste, Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, reacted to the post, defending musicians who came from wealthy families but still worked to build successful careers.
“No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top,” Davido wrote.
The exchange escalated after Davido dismissed Erigga’s message as “useless motivation” and referred to the rapper as an “imbecile”.
Erigga subsequently responded without directly revisiting the argument over family wealth, instead criticising the use of illness or medical conditions as an insult.
“Big love to everyone on the spectrum, Down syndrome, autism, etc… it can never be cool to insult people with a disease,” he wrote.
Davido later suggested that he could leave music and concentrate on his other financial interests, writing, “No worry o I go soon leave their music for una go make my billions… then that shit gonna be boring AF.”
He also questioned the appeal of poverty, asking, “Deep down, who like poverty?”
The exchange has since drawn reactions across social media, with the dispute shifting from whether family wealth gives some artistes an advantage to the broader question of whether financial privilege diminishes the effort required to build a successful music career.
