EPL: Rooney urges Carrick to take Ferguson-style action on Fernandes

Wayne Rooney

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged manager Michael Carrick to consider Sir Alex Ferguson’s approach to managing Cristiano Ronaldo as he seeks to restore standards at the club.

Rooney made the suggestion after Bruno Fernandes questioned Carrick’s tactics following Manchester United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

Speaking on The United Stand, Rooney suggested that Fernandes could benefit from a short break.

The former England international recalled how Ferguson occasionally gave Ronaldo time off to help the Portuguese forward rest and recharge.

However, Rooney believes Fernandes could need similar treatment after a long season and a World Cup.

“Fernandes might need the manager to tell him to go on a little holiday because he had a long season and then a long World Cup,” Rooney said.

“I remember Alex Ferguson did that with Cristiano Ronaldo. But he would be recharging his batteries.”

This is coming ahead of Man United’s Premier League game against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.
