Manchester United have opened discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential move for Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall as the Premier League giants intensify efforts to complete a third midfield signing before the new season.
United are seeking further reinforcements in midfield after completing the signings of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea as part of a wider rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The club had been pursuing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but negotiations reportedly collapsed after concerns emerged during the player’s medical assessment, prompting United to explore alternative targets.
Bergvall has now emerged as a leading option, with reports indicating that United have made initial contact with Tottenham to discuss the availability of the highly rated Sweden international.
According to transfer reports, Tottenham have placed a valuation of between £50 million and £55 million on the 20-year-old midfielder, who is also attracting interest from Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.
Bergvall is believed to be open to leaving north London this summer after struggling for consistent playing time last season, during which he featured under three different Tottenham managers.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the midfielder had informed Spurs of his desire to secure regular first-team football rather than remain on the fringes of the squad.
Romano said: “Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham is expected to leave the club this summer. Bergvall told Tottenham that he wants to play on a regular basis. He’s ready to maybe take a different step.”
He added: “After the signings of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, and with Tottenham not playing European football, he doesn’t want to spend the season on the bench or playing ten minutes every two weeks.”
Romano also disclosed that Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United remain actively interested in signing the Swedish international.
According to him, Forest have submitted the strongest financial proposal, while Newcastle are attempting to convince the player with their long-term sporting project and ambitions.
Despite competition from those clubs, Manchester United have now entered the race as manager Michael Carrick continues reshaping his midfield ahead of the new Premier League season.
Neither Manchester United nor Tottenham have officially commented on the reported negotiations, while Bergvall’s future is expected to become clearer as the summer transfer window progresses.
