Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-0 in Michael Carrick’s first game as interim manager on Saturday, inflicting significant damage to their rivals’ Premier League title chances.
The win at Old Trafford, courtesy of second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, lifts United to fourth in the table and leaves City six points behind leaders Arsenal.
For City, their hopes of regaining the title from a formidable Arsenal side are fading fast.

Arsenal will move nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side if they beat Nottingham Forest later on Saturday as City’s miserable January took another turn for the worse.
City have now dropped nine points in their last four league outings to hand Mikel Arteta and Arsenal a huge advantage in the title race.
