Chelsea suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday as the Bees produced a ruthless second-half display to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
The Blues controlled significant periods of the first half but failed to turn their possession and pressure into a goal, with both sides going into the interval level at 0-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Brentford broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Jordan Schuster delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Jordan Anthony headed home from close range to put the hosts ahead.
Chelsea attempted to respond but struggled to create a clear route back into the contest as Brentford grew in confidence and began to exploit spaces behind the visitors’ defence.
The Bees doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute when Igor Thiago finished a swift counter-attack, leaving Chelsea facing a two-goal deficit with time running out.
Brentford completed the rout deep into stoppage time when Fábio Carvalho struck in the 94th minute to seal a 3-0 victory and send the home supporters into celebration.
The result extended Brentford’s unbeaten run after their opening-day victory was followed by three consecutive draws before Friday’s emphatic win.
Chelsea, meanwhile, missed the opportunity to strengthen their position in the upper reaches of the table and remain one point above Brentford in sixth place after the defeat.
The Blues were without João Pedro for the match, while Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson were named in the starting line-up, with Henderson making his debut after almost three months without a competitive appearance.
Brentford’s victory was completed with a clean sheet, as Caoimhin Kelleher and the home defence kept Chelsea scoreless despite periods of pressure from Cole Palmer and his teammates.
