Manchester City’s pursuit of Enzo Maresca as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola has been complicated by a compensation dispute with Chelsea.

Guardiola who stepped down following the end of the 2024/2025 campaign bringing to an end of earlier suggestions of him leaving the club, prompting City to begin early planning for a new managerial era. Maresca, who previously worked within City’s coaching setup, was among the names linked with internal discussions over possible successors.

However, Chelsea are insisting that any move involving Maresca must first be accompanied by a financial settlement, citing the terms of his previous contract and related obligations from his time at the club.

The London club’s position has effectively slowed progress on any formal appointment process, with discussions now expected to continue at administrative and legal levels between both clubs.

Maresca is understood to be open to a return to Manchester City, where he previously served under Guardiola during a successful period that included the club’s treble-winning 2022–23 season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are maintaining that their stance is based on contractual protections and the need for proper compensation before releasing the former coach to another Premier League side.

City remain interested in resolving the matter quickly as they look to finalise their long-term planning, but no agreement has yet been reached.

Both clubs are still in contact, with the situation remaining open as negotiations continue.
