Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea despite growing pressure over the club’s poor run of results.
Reports from the BBC, Sky Sports and the Press Association on Tuesday indicated that the former England midfielder would lead United to Stamford Bridge as the club’s hierarchy considers his future.
Carrick’s position has come under intense scrutiny after United went eight games without a victory. The pressure increased following Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which left the club just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
The 45-year-old was at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday to oversee a routine training session as preparations continued for the crucial encounter.
According to the BBC, sources indicated that United’s hierarchy was prepared to give Carrick an opportunity to reverse the team’s fortunes.
His immediate challenge is to steady a side whose recent performances have raised serious concerns among supporters and intensified questions about his ability to turn the season around.
Carrick was appointed on a two-year contract in May after an impressive spell as caretaker manager. He helped revive United’s campaign following their struggles under former manager Ruben Amorim.
United subsequently finished third in the Premier League, securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League and raising expectations ahead of the new season.
However, the team’s current slump has sharply changed the mood around Old Trafford, with Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea presenting Carrick with an important opportunity to restore confidence.
Although reports suggest he will remain in charge for the match, his longer-term future remains uncertain as United seek an end to their winless run.
