Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent head coach following a strong end to the season that secured Champions League qualification and restored stability at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old has signed a two-year deal after stepping in as interim manager in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick’s impact was immediate and decisive, guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish after a difficult first half of the campaign.

Since taking charge on January 13, he has won 11 of his 16 matches, with United collecting more points than any other top-flight side over that period.

The club said in its official statement: “Manchester United is delighted to confirm the appointment of Michael Carrick as our permanent head coach on a two-year contract, following an impressive interim spell in charge.”

Carrick, a former United midfielder who made 464 appearances for the club, spoke emotionally about the responsibility of leading the team he once served on the pitch.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride,” he said.

He added: “Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.”

Carrick continued: “Now we move forward with ambition and purpose. The club and our supporters deserve to be competing for the biggest honours again.”

Carrick is no stranger to the role, having previously taken interim charge in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure, but this is his first long-term managerial appointment at Old Trafford.

His return came at a turbulent time for the club, but his calm approach and tactical discipline quickly steadied performances and rebuilt confidence within the squad.

As United look ahead, attention now shifts to squad rebuilding and recruitment, with the manager expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of the project.

For supporters, the message is clear: Carrick has earned the chance to lead Manchester United into a new era after a season that changed the direction of the club.
