Enugu State has joined the prestigious Under2 Coalition, a global network of subnational governments committed to ambitious climate action, marking another significant milestone in Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s climate leadership and green transformation agenda.

The Under2 Coalition, coordinated by the international non-profit Climate Group, brings together states and regional governments committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating the transition to sustainable, climate-resilient economies.

Enugu State’s membership, formalised through the signing of the Coalition’s Global Climate Leadership Memorandum of Understanding on 27 October 2026 by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidebere Onyia, further strengthens the state’s international visibility and opens new opportunities for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, strategic partnerships and access to international climate finance.

The development further demonstrates Governor Mbah’s determination to position Enugu as a leading destination for green investment and a model of sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.

Under his administration, Enugu has recorded a series of important climate governance milestones, including joining the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC), participating in London Climate Action Week, developing a robust State Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, and establishing the Climate and Development Investment Platform (CDIP) under the Governor’s Office to coordinate climate investments and accelerate project implementation.

The administration has also recently advanced a landmark proposal for a 100MW distributed solar energy investment programme, facilitated through the CDIP, with an estimated investment value of approximately US$200 million. The initiative demonstrates the state’s growing ability to translate climate ambition into concrete investment opportunities capable of expanding electricity access, stimulating economic activity and creating jobs.

The state’s admission into the Under2 Coalition was brokered by Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, who has been instrumental in connecting Enugu State to international climate networks, development partners and investment opportunities.

Professor Okereke described the development as an important step towards strengthening Enugu’s international partnerships and mobilising resources for the implementation of the Governor’s ambitious development agenda.

He emphasised that climate action and sustainable development are not competing priorities but mutually reinforcing objectives, noting that well-designed climate investments can simultaneously expand energy access, create employment, attract private capital, improve public health and strengthen economic resilience.

Membership of the Coalition is expected to provide Enugu State with opportunities to learn from leading subnational governments worldwide, strengthen institutional capacity, showcase its investment-ready projects and engage international climate finance institutions and development partners.

For Governor Mbah, the latest milestone reinforces a consistent vision: that Enugu’s economic transformation can be driven by innovation, clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and strategic international partnerships.

With its growing portfolio of climate initiatives and expanding international partnerships, Enugu State is increasingly positioning itself not merely as a participant in global climate action, but as an emerging leader in Africa’s green economic transformation.
