From Jude Chinedu, Enugu
The Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Steve Oruruo, has assured party faithful in the state that the party remains strong, united, and resolute despite the recent defection of the state governor.
Speaking during a media interaction in Enugu, Oruruo said his focus is to rekindle the spirit of party members and reposition the PDP for greater strength.
“Our mission is to galvanise the spirit of our faithful and ensure that the PDP stays united and motivated. The party, as an opposition, needs to create a sense of reawakening, a sense of rebirth, and a sense of renaissance. The departure of a few individuals does not amount to the collapse of the PDP,” he said.
He maintained that the PDP’s foundation in Enugu remains deeply rooted and unshaken by recent political developments.
The acting chairman pledged that under his leadership, the PDP would be guided by fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness.
“We are committed to fairness, equity, solidarity, and equality. Our goal is to ensure that the PDP does not lose its grip in terms of substance, value, or relevance within the political system.”

While acknowledging that the loss of a sitting governor may pose financial and structural challenges, Oruruo insisted that the will of the people remains stronger than any setback.
“There may be some pains that come with losing a governor, but beyond that lies the will of the masses, which will always surpass every political turbulence,” he said.
He also emphasised the need for the South-East to maintain a prominent role within the PDP’s national structure.
On the governor’s defection, Oruruo described it as a constitutional right but said it should serve as a wake-up call to loyal members.
“Defection is permitted by the constitution. What the PDP must do is rebuild itself, deepen its roots among the people, and renew its commitment to credible leadership,” he stated.
He admitted that the party faces internal challenges but expressed confidence that they are being handled through the PDP’s established structures.
