The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Enugu State chapter, led by Dr. Johnpaul Anih, has said the party has not zoned its governorship ticket to any particular part of the state ahead of the 2027 election.

The party stated that the governorship position remains open to competent and qualified citizens from any part of Enugu State, who possesses the capacity to win elections and unseat the APC-led administration in the state.

Addressing journalists on Friday after the State Working Committee (SWC) meeting of the party, the Enugu NDC Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Ugwueze, said any capable citizen of the state, irrespective of senatorial zone, is eligible to contest for the party’s governorship ticket in 2027.

According to him, the decision was in line with the party’s determination to prioritise competence and electoral viability over zoning considerations.

“This decision aligns with the party’s determination to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State and, to achieve that, we are not going to sacrifice capacity on the altar of zoning.

“Capturing the Lion Building remains our major target and we must explore every available option and strategy,” Ugwueze said.

He, however, disclosed that the party had already zoned the senatorial positions across the state based on equity, fairness and balanced power distribution.

According to him, the Enugu East Senatorial District seat has been zoned to Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, particularly Enugu North Local Government Area, being the only council area in the constituency that has not occupied the position in recent times.

He further stated that the Enugu North Senatorial District seat had been zoned to Igboeze South Local Government Area within the Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency, while the Enugu West Senatorial District position was zoned to Awgu Local Government Area, which he described as the only council area in the district yet to produce a senator.
