Enugu: Eze our best bet -Odo

Onuora Odo, a lawyer, is the legal adviser of Grassroots Movement, Lagos chapter. He speaks on why the group is rooting for Senator Ayogu Eze.

What is the interest of of Grassroots Movement in Enugu politics?

The group has been advocating for good governance in Enugu State and beyond. We have decided to collapse all our structures to drum up support for Ayogu Eze. The group cuts across all nooks and cranny of Enugu State. If you go to Abianu, Ugwuaji, Ugwua River, and Enugu-Ezike, we have made some positive impacts there.

The group is made up of mainly professionals. We look at everything we do critically and we have come to realise that there is no way we can fold our arms and keep quiet when things are not going the way it should. We take it upon ourselves to educate the people and tell them the way forward. We embark on massive sensitisation, massive conscientiousness, and awareness of the teeming populace. The reason being that there is what we call floating voters; people who have their PVC but do not even know who to vote for. It is a platform, a rallying point for people who are conscious of their environment.

There are people buying and selling PVC for N2,000 or N1,000 in Enugu-Ezike but we have taken an initiative to change it, we told them that instead of voting according to what is given to them, they should vote according to the dictates of their conscience. The thing is that, people at the corridors of power have collectively used us. We have been burnt and fooled; not once, not twice but this time around, we feel it is incumbent on us to go and tell people, that in politics promise weighs less than feather. No more opportunity to hoodwink the people.

What is Ayogu Eze bringing to the table?

Personally I have had close interaction with Senator Ayogu Eze so I don’t tell you what I heard from people but what I personally experienced. Ayogu Eze is down to earth; he is a pragmatic leader, visionary leader. He is a transformative leader who will give the people a sense of belonging. He does not give you empty promises. He won’t make promise and do another thing, and he doesn’t do that. The man is needed because there is no access to medical facilities, no road network, there is no government presence in major parts of the state. And that is why we are taking it as a burden, to make sure he gets to Lion Building, the seat of government. We have taken it upon ourselves to carry this load so our people can be liberated from bad governance.

How can, since APC is new in Enugu?

That is why we are here. We are moving beyond primordial sentiments, politics of party affiliations. We are moving away charting a course of paradigm shift, we are no more interested in which party you belong to; we are interested in the individual who is running. We have come to agree, the impact is huge and every message the people are sending is that Senator Ayogu Eze will be declared winner of Enugu State gubernatorial election. This man enjoys the support of his people, his integrity and credibility and all that are not in doubt. One of those drumming support for him is Jim Nwobodo of old Enugu State. So, with these supporters, you are confident Ayogu Eze will make it?

When you talk about support, there is what we call grassroots support and there is elitist support. And we have Jim Nwobodo, Ken Nnamani, former governor, Sullivan Chime and the host of other creme-de-la-creme, in Enugu State, including Baywood Ibe, supporting the APC candidate, they are all solidly behind this person because they have seen the potentials in him, the resources, both mental and physical, he has all it takes to move Enugu State to the Promise land.

Senator Ayogu Eze, having been a personal assistant to a governor, a Commissioner for Information and a principal member of the Red Chamber on two different occasions, has all it takes to govern Enugu State.

If you have come close to Senator Ayogu Eze, you will know he is a man of himself, he is not a featherweight, he is not a pushover, and he has brain of his own.
