Enugu is set to host the 2nd edition of the Enugu City International Marathon on August 29, 2026, as the state leverages sport to unlock tourism, create jobs, and energize youth engagement.
The flagship event, backed by the Enugu State Government and organized by Nilayo Sports Management, Nigeria’s leading road race organizers — is being positioned as a Gold Label-style race to attract elite African and international athletes while driving mass participation.
More than a race, the Enugu City Marathon is a strategic platform for economic growth.
The 42km marathon kicks off at 6:30AM from ShopRite, Abakaliki Road, winding through Enugu’s iconic landmarks in the “Coal City.” The 10km Fun Run starts at 8:30AM from Chris Tee Petrol Station, CIC Road, and concludes at Opara Square by 12:30PM.
The course is designed to showcase Enugu’s culture, hospitality, and heritage to thousands of runners and spectators. With registrations rising daily from athletes across Nigeria and the diaspora, the anticipated influx is expected to drive demand across hotels, transport, food services, and local businesses during race week.
The initiative aligns with the state government’s vision to reposition Enugu as the premier destination for business, tourism, and sports in the South-East.
Performance will be rewarded. Substantial cash prizes have been earmarked for top finishers in both the male and female elite categories of the 42km race.
The 10km fun run offers families and fitness enthusiasts a chance to participate in a professionally managed, community-focused event.
Nilayo Sports Management confirms that logistics, security, medical support, and elite athlete recruitment are all at advanced stages to deliver an international-standard experience.
The long-term goal is to establish the Enugu City Marathon as a permanent fixture on the global running calendar and to set a new benchmark for road races outside Lagos.
