The maiden edition of South-East Amateur Boxing Championship has opened in Umuahia, with Enugu and Abia states in early wins after the opening bouts.
Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba while declaring open the Championship sponsored by the State Government, restated her commitment towards reviving boxing in the South East region and discovering future champions.
Ananaba said the championship marked a significant milestone in grassroots sports development, adding that it provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents; while promoting youth engagement, social inclusion and economic empowerment.

Ananaba described the championship as a reflection of the Abia Government’s commitment to talent discovery, athlete empowerment and sporting excellence.
“Sports remains a powerful tool for youth engagement, social inclusion, economic empowerment and regional unity.
“Through the governor’s support, Abia continues to position itself as a hub for sporting excellence and talent development,” he said.
He urged participating athletes to uphold discipline, respect and fair play throughout the competition.
The South-East representative on the Board of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Nnamdi Oji, said the championship would help revive the sport in the region and restore its lost glory.
Oji, represented by sports consultant Mr Paul Ngadiuba said boxing had witnessed a decline in the South-East since the era of renowned boxers such as late Obisie Nwankpa and others.
He described the championship as a timely intervention aimed at rejuvenating boxing and producing athletes capable of representing the region at national and international competitions.
The South-East Zonal Sports representative at the National Sports Commission, Mr Bernard Ezeama, described boxing as an exciting sport that requires discipline and self-control.
He commended Abia for hosting the championship and pledged the commission’s support towards talent discovery and athlete development.
Director of Sports in Abia, Obioma George, said the championship would help reposition boxing in the South-East and create opportunities for young athletes.
George said the competition would serve as a platform for identifying and grooming talents capable of excelling at national and international levels.
After three rounds of action, Israel Ogbodo and Chidiebere Chukwuemeka emerged victorious in their respective contests, giving Enugu and Abia early wins.
