Congolese entrepreneur, Hamisi Ngalula, has spoken about the personal sacrifices associated with building a business, identifying reduced family time, business pressures and the demands of entrepreneurship as some of the realities often overlooked in conversations about commercial success.
Ngalula, founder of electronics retail company iPhone Congo, said that although entrepreneurship could provide financial independence, the journey required considerable personal commitment and sacrifices that were not always visible to the public.
Reflecting on his experience, he identified the time spent away from family as one of the most significant sacrifices involved in establishing his business.
“Entrepreneurship can bring financial independence, but it requires many sacrifices. Behind the visible results are hard work, responsibilities, and concerns that people do not always see,” he said.
He explained that the early stages of building a business often demand considerable attention from entrepreneurs, leaving them with less time for their loved ones.
“In my experience, the most tangible sacrifice concerns the time dedicated to family. During the early stages of establishing a business, you are extremely busy: you have to organise operations, solve problems, and monitor its development. This leaves you with less time for your loved ones, and it is something young entrepreneurs should not underestimate,” he added.
Ngalula also identified criticism and rivalry as some of the pressures that accompany business visibility, noting that his experiences had taught him the importance of maintaining focus despite external distractions.
“Visibility also brings its share of pressure. You may encounter criticism, rivalry, and people who do not necessarily want to see you progress. I am learning to take a step back and remain focused on my work and objectives,” he said.
According to him, the experience has broadened his understanding of what it means to build a sustainable business, particularly the importance of balancing commercial responsibilities with personal values and relationships.
“This experience has made me realise the weight of responsibility. Building a business is not just about making money; it is a commitment that takes up a significant part of your life. You must learn to manage it while preserving your relationships and values,” he stated.
He further identified faith as an important source of support in navigating the uncertainties associated with entrepreneurship.
“For me, faith is an essential source of support throughout this journey. It helps me maintain courage and hope in the face of difficulties. I believe that, for those who believe in God, faith can accompany their efforts and help them overcome moments of uncertainty,” he said.
Ngalula, whose company operates in Lubumbashi and has extended its commercial presence to other locations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said he hoped to build a business whose impact would extend beyond commercial achievements.
He expressed his ambition to create employment opportunities, provide technology-related training and support young people through the company’s growth.
“Today, I also measure success by the ability to build a business without losing one’s values or neglecting the people who matter,” he added.
