Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has urged the Federal Government to implement more projects in the state to enhance the wellbeing of the people.
He made the appeal in Uyo when members of the House of Representatives Committees on Environment and Host Communities visited him, yesterday.
Represented by his deputy, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, Eno said his administration would continue to implement environment-friendly projects. “One of our problems in the state is gully erosion. We urge the Federal Government to support us in this area. As a government, we are committed to making the environment better and friendly for our people to live in.”
The governor expressed concerns at the state of the federal roads in the state, and urged the Federal Government to intervene in the interest of the citizenry.
He said Akwa Ibom was a leading oil producing state, adding that it deserved the visible presence of the Federal Government’s projects.
Earlier, Mr. Julius Pondi, chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment, said members of the two committees were in the state for a retreat.
He said during the event, the committees would critically look at the environmental challenges confronting the nation.
“We are here to look at the issue of divestment in the oil and gas industry. We shall also look at the environmental impact on host communities. I am glad that the organisers of this retreat chose Akwa Ibom because this state is a critical stakeholder in the oil sector.
“We shall look at the very burning issue concerning the host communities in the Niger Delta, as contained in the Petroleum Industry Act,” he said.
Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities, Mr Dumnamene Dekor, described the retreat as ‘very sensitive and crucial.,” he said.
