FIFA has banned England defender Jarell Quansah for two matches following his red card against Mexico.
The England defender was due to miss the quarter-final with Norway in Miami.
The FA were considering appealing that decision but FIFA have now extended the ban to two games, meaning Quansah will be unavailable for the semi-final as well, if England get that far.
A statement on Thursday confirmed that “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed […] a 2-match suspension for a breach of article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”
The two-man ban comes after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded Quansah’s tackle on Gallardo during England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico constituted “serious foul play”.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel was left furious by the decision.
“It’s just not good enough,” he said. “The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That’s the bottom line.
“Is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not.”
The suspension only applies to the World Cup meaning he will only be available to play again if England reach the final or contest the third-place play-off.
The FA were considering appealing against Quansah’s one-match ban due to the Committee’s decision to suspend an automatic one-man ban handed to the red-carded Folarin Balogun of the United States which had initially meant he would miss the co-hosts’ last-16 match against Belgium.
That ban was overturned and he played against Belgium, though the USA fell to a 4-1 defeat and were eliminated from the competition.
