Empowering youths in Imo

Former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does.

“It speaks to youth in a language they can understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.

“It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.”

Indeed, as a tool for development, sports can serve as an impetus for social transformation and change. It brings people together,  particularly the youth, and those who excel hug stardom and wealth. 

Sports development is very important in helping the youths to develop their skills and keep them away from the streets. Many believe that youth empowerment through sports remains the best way to engage them positively.

  So, to take sports to the next level in Imo State, Governor  Hope Uzodimma has approved the appointment of Prince Eleazar Onyewuchi Ogbonna as chairman, Imo State Sports Commission.

Ogbonna, who hails from Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, played professional football in Italy. He is a sports ambassador and member of the International Anti Corruption Assembly in Europe.

Prior to his appointment, he runs a grassroot talent hunt outfit. And with this appointment, it is expected that an entirely new and unprecedented frontier shift in human capital development will be activated by the youths-friendly governor of Imo State.

Mr Stanford Arinze Nwokedi, SSA (Gov) Public Enlightenment, said: “It is a masterstroke. The governor has by this appointment shown he places  premium importance on human capital development.

“This shows that Governor Uzodimma thinks overdrive and is creatively ensuring that youths’ restiveness no longer surfaces in Imo State. I wish our youths maximize this potent opportunity.”

He added that Ogbonna is capable of setting the state on the path of sports excellence because of his wealth of experience and passion for youth empowerment.
