Emir Gwandu decries high electricity tariffs in Nigeria, flags off mass metering in Kebbi

From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi

The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammad Illiyasu Bashir, who is also Chairman of the Council of Chiefs in the state, has decried high electricity tariffs in Nigeria as he flagged off mass metering in Kebbi State.

The emir, represented by the Waziri Gwandu, Alhaji Abdulllahi Umar, who stated this during the official flag-off of the metering in Birnin Kebbi, noted that the tariff charges are high in the country compared to other countries.

According to him, “no country in the world pays high electricity tariffs like Nigeria despite the inability of millions of Nigerians to pay for power supply”.

He appealed to the Federal Government and power distribution companies in Nigeria to reconsider the exorbitant, unaffordable electricity tariffs in the country, even as he appreciated the efforts of the Kebbi State Government in ensuring steady power supply in the state.

The traditional ruler also commended Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for flagging off the mass metering in Kebbi State, saying it will put an end to ridiculous charges and may improve power supply.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Head of Metering, Kebbi State, Malam Abba Mai Borno, said that the team will begin meter installations with Band A customers in Kebbi before stepping down to other customers.

“The prepaid meters are for free and with free installations to each customer in Kebbi State”.

Mai Borno urged customers to cooperate with the installation team to ensure seamless operations in Kebbi State.

The programme featured a practical demonstration of how the meters would be installed before a mammoth gathering and high officials of the company.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Rural Electrification, Alhaji Garba Salisu Takware, appreciated the Kebbi State Government under Dr Nasir Idris for procuring a 15kVA transformer to the tune of one hundred and fifty million naira, which he said, when installed, will enable the people of Kebbi State to enjoy steady power supply, particularly during the month of Ramadan.

Regional Manager, Mr Makinu; Waziri Gwandu, Abdulllahi Umar; Chairman, Kebbi Development Forum, Malam Usman Gwandu; among other top dignitaries, graced the ceremony held in Birnin Kebbi.
