Emenike: Imo police probe allegations of hospital invasion, assault of staff

Emenike Hospital Owerri invaded

The Imo State Police Command has commenced investigation into allegations by former Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike that officers invaded his hospital in Owerri, the state capital, assaulted staff and patients and arrested two employees.

The command disclosed the probe in a post on X on Thursday.

Emenike, a member of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, had accused officers of the command and officials of the state’s waste management agency of invading Emenike Hospital, Owerri, on two separate occasions.

In a series of posts on his verified Instagram handle on Wednesday, Emenike shared videos purportedly showing armed personnel arresting members of his hospital staff.

According to him, the first incident occurred on September 25, allegedly on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri Urban Division, with the involvement of officers from Oji Police Station.

He alleged that the second incident occurred on October 21, when individuals said to be from the Imo State Waste Management Agency entered the hospital premises, assaulted staff and patients, and took away the hospital administrator and cashier.

He said the two employees were being detained at Oji Police Station after being brutalised.

Emenike wrote: “A HOSPITAL MUST BE A PLACE OF CARE AND SAFETY — NOT A SCENE OF VIOLENCE. Emenike Hospital has reported that individuals said to be from an Imo State waste-management agency, after an earlier invasion of the officers of the police force on the order of the DPO Owerri Urban Division on 25th September, 2026, entered its premises, assaulted staff and patients, and took away the hospital administrator and cashier. The hospital also alleges that armed police officers from Oji Police Station were involved. These claims require an urgent, impartial investigation.”

The former international, who said he built the hospital after representing Nigeria and playing in Europe as a way of giving back to his community, described the incident as painful and called on Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight authorities to intervene.

He demanded the release of the detained staff, medical attention for those injured, protection for witnesses, and preservation and review of CCTV footage and incident records.

Reacting, the Imo State Police Command said it has swung into action.

“The Imo State Police Command has commenced a thorough investigation into the incident to identify the officers involved and take appropriate disciplinary action where necessary,” the X post reads.
