Elephant attack leaves one dead, one missing in Oyo community

Panic has gripped the Innayin community in Oke-Ogun zone of Oyo State following a deadly encounter with a wild elephant that claimed one life and left another resident missing.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when the animal reportedly strayed into the community, which triggered distress among residents.

Security operatives, working alongside local hunters and vigilantes, responded swiftly after receiving an emergency alert.

Their search led to the discovery of the body of Ibrahim Tijani, 45, in a nearby bush, bearing injuries linked to a violent animal attack. His remains have been deposited at the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile.

Concerns deepened as another resident, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, 50, was declared missing after reportedly encountering the same elephant.

Authorities said coordinated search efforts were on-going to locate him, even as the community remains on edge.

Police authorities have urged residents of Innayin and surrounding areas to stay away from the affected zone and promptly report any sighting of the animal to security agencies.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Olugbenga, assured that the situation is being carefully managed. He stressed that personnel were working to prevent further casualties and restore calm.

In addressing the wildlife threat professionally, the command disclosed it was collaborating with the National Park Service Nigeria for expert intervention, in line with conservation protocols.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to contain the situation and avert further tragedy.
