Electoral act amendment was Tinubu’s bill all along – Ene Obi

FCT Election

A Human Rights and Social Justice Advocate, Ene Obi, has alleged that the recent amendment to the Electoral Act was driven by President Bola Tinubu from the outset.

Obi made the remarks on Friday on Arise News, where she weighed in on the controversy surrounding the amendment and the debate over the electronic transmission of election results.

According to her, “With the Electoral Act passed, we’ll focus on the judiciary. This was the President’s bill all along; he was watching it. He didn’t need to involve the Attorney-General – he passed what he wanted.”

Her comments come amid public debate over provisions in the amended law, particularly as they relate to electronic transmission of results and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral framework.

Obi also criticised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), for suggesting that civil society organisations do not represent the wishes of Nigerians.

“It’s unfortunate that he thinks civil society organisations don’t represent Nigerians’ wishes. He used to be on this side,” she said.

Obi maintained that with the Electoral Act amendment now passed, attention would shift to the judiciary, which she said remains a critical pillar in safeguarding democratic accountability.
