Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to subject the proposed Electoral Act amendment to an individual vote, following the Senate’s failure to reach a consensus on the matter.

Abaribe argued during the plenary that each senator should clearly state their position through a division vote, rather than adopting a collective voice vote.

As the motion failed to get a seconder, Abaribe later withdrew his motion calling for an individual vote.

The Electoral Act amendment, particularly the provision relating to the transmission of election results, has continued to generate controversy within the National Assembly and among the public.

Protests and sharp criticisms continue to trail the Senate’s handling of the issue.
