El-Rufai’s current oppressors nicer to him than he was to critics – Adeyanju

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has alleged that former Kaduna governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai treated critics worse than he is facing under the incumbent administration.

El-Rufai was detained on February 16 after honouring an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He was released two days after, and subsequently re-arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), who handed him over to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). El-Rufai has remained in custody ever since.

On February 12, ICPC had tried and failed to get the ex-governor arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, upon his arrival from Cairo, Egypt.

Speaking after his near arrest, El-Rufai accused the President Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government of political witch-hunt.

El-Rufai’s family also recently accused the ICPC of conducting a media trial and lying about recovering phone tapping equipment from El-Rufai’s Abuja home during a February raid.

On March 4, El-Rufai and his family sent a formal legal notice to the ICPC accusing the commission of violating his fundamental rights while demanding $15.6 billion in damages.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Adeyanju faulted El-Rufai’s handling of critics when he held sway as Kaduna governor between 2015 and 2023.

He said, “Elrufai is an unrepentant tyrant and oppressor. If given another opportunity to get access to power, he will do worst than he did in the past.

“Anyone supporting him is a hungry cretin and a desperate unprincipled politician who want to grab power at all cost. During COVID-19 when Sheikh Bello Yabo, an Islamic cleric, criticised him, El-Rufai waited until the eve of Sallah, then sent police from Kaduna all the way to Sokoto to arrest and detain him.

“The current oppressors of ElRufai are nicer to him than he was to his critics. ElRufai deserves the karma he is getting.”
