Former Governor of Kaduna State Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has expressed concern over the number of voters that have so far registered in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the Southeast.

Speaking at an event in Imo State at the weekend, El-Rufai urged the people to take the exercise seriously, especially women.

He said, “Our government is democratic; we elect our leaders, we don’t select them, we don’t appoint them, so voting is important. Registering to vote is a civic duty; it’s not a political imperative, it’s a civic duty which, as a citizen, you must take advantage of.

“Looking at the numbers of the Continuous Voter Registration in the last two weeks, the Southeast, including Imo State, of course, is lagging behind the rest of Nigeria. I want to appeal to you, our mothers, sisters, daughters in this room, to please take this up. Our children that are sixteen years and above, who will be eighteen in two years and ready to vote, we need to go out and register; it’s very, very important,” El-Rufai said.
