Super Eagles ‘Captain Fantastic’ William Troost-Ekong has set a record as the highest-scoring defender in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations after his bullet header in the 38th minute put Nigeria ahead in the 2023 final against host Ivory Coast at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday night.

The defender had in the semi-final victory against South Africa equaled late Stephen Keshi’s record of four (4) goals, when he scored a penalty.

Troost-Ekong opened his AFCON account in Nigeria’s 2-1 semi-final victory against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the AFCON 2019 finals hosted by Egypt.

The 30-year-old doubled his tally in a group game against Sudan two years ago in Cameroon.

The PAOK Salonica of Greece centre-half has scored thrice for the Super Eagles at the ongoing AFCON 2023 finals in Cote d’Ivoire.
