Nigeria’s Super Eagles have earned widespread praise for their improved performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, despite falling short of a place in the final.
The team’s resurgence and disciplined display throughout the tournament have been highlighted as key positives following their semi-final loss to host nation Morocco.
Speaking on the team’s campaign, the Technical Advisor on Sports Development to the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, commended the Super Eagles for showing renewed confidence, tactical discipline, and resilience at the continental showpiece.
Dr. Osetoba described Nigeria’s semi-final defeat as disappointing but encouraging, noting that the team’s overall performance marked a clear improvement in form and competitiveness.
“The Super Eagles showed a different level of hunger, organisation and belief. Their performance at AFCON 2025 reflects growth and a positive shift in Nigerian football,” she said.
Nigeria were eliminated after a tense goalless draw against Morocco in Rabat, losing 4–2 on penalties. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved decisive for the hosts, saving two Nigerian spot-kicks to secure a historic final berth for the Atlas Lions.
Despite the result, the Super Eagles’ strong showing throughout the tournament rekindled optimism among fans and sports stakeholders, with several players delivering standout performances against top African opposition.
Dr. Osetoba noted that the team’s improved form has inspired athletes in Ekiti State and across the country to strive for excellence, adding that the Super Eagles’ campaign demonstrated the benefits of better preparation and leadership in Nigerian sports.
She also acknowledged the contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Sports Commission (NSC), citing improved structures and support as factors behind the team’s progress.
Looking ahead, Dr. Osetoba urged the Super Eagles to build on their momentum as they prepare for the third-place playoff against Egypt.
“The progress is clear. This team must finish strong and carry this improved form forward,” she said.
The Super Eagles will face Egypt in the third-place match, aiming to cap their AFCON 2025 campaign with a podium finish and further underline their return to top form.
