The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an internal investigation into allegations that some of its operatives extorted N10 million from Nigerian hip-hop artiste Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips.

The rapper, who was arrested alongside other suspected internet fraudsters, alleged that he was forced to pay the hefty sum to regain his freedom.

Reacting to the claims, the EFCC, in a statement yesterday, November 1, 2025, by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the Commission “views the allegation with great seriousness” and has immediately begun an investigation into the matter.

“We have seen his claims and have commenced investigations accordingly. Officers in the team that handled his case have been summoned to the Commission’s corporate headquarters and relieved of operational duties pending the conclusion of the investigation,” Oyewale stated.

The anti-graft agency emphasised that the alleged conduct “does not reflect the true picture of the EFCC,” adding that it remains committed to the core value of integrity.

“The Commission will take necessary action against any staff found culpable.

“However, if the allegation is found to be false and intended to malign or tarnish the image of the EFCC, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed,” the statement warned.

Oyewale urged the public to remain calm and trust the EFCC to transparently handle the matter, reaffirming its mandate to combat financial and economic crimes without compromise.

The controversy comes amid growing public scrutiny of law enforcement agencies’ operations and allegations of high-handedness during arrests of entertainers and young Nigerians suspected of cybercrime.
