The Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged closer collaboration with the Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport to curb illicit financial flows and safeguard the integrity of the forthcoming general elections.

The commitment was reached during a courtesy visit by the new Chief of Aviation Security at the airport, Aliyu Yahuza Abdullahi, to the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Kano Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Friday S. Ebelo.

During the visit, Abdullahi assured the Commission of AVSEC’s unwavering support, emphasising the critical role of intelligence sharing in dismantling syndicates that exploit the aviation sector to move illicit funds.

To him, AVSEC would work closely with the EFCC to provide effective operational assistance.

He, however, urged the Commission to provide prior notice of planned operations at the airport to enable AVSEC deploy resources efficiently and ensure seamless coordination with EFCC operatives.

Responding, Ebelo welcomed the renewed commitment to collaboration and called for heightened vigilance, particularly regarding the physical movement of large sums of cash through the airport.

With the general elections approaching, he warned that politicians could attempt to deploy illicit funds to influence the democratic process.

The EFCC man urged security agencies to remain proactive in intercepting suspicious cash movements and preventing economic sabotage, stressing that a coordinated inter-agency approach would not only deter financial crimes but also protect Nigeria’s electoral system from the corrosive impact of unlawful funds.
