From Geoffrey Anyanwu, Enugu
Labour Party (LP) Chairman in Enugu, Casmir Agbo, has said anyone laying claims to the governorship candidature of the party outside Chijioke Edeoga is an impostor.
At a press briefing in Enugu, Agbo explained that Everest Nnaji never indicated interest to contest the governorship primary of the party and did not, at any time, purchase the expression of interest and nomination form of the party.
Stressing that Nnaji neither know where the party office is located nor the names of his ward or local government chairmen, the LP state boss accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sponsoring Nnaji to cause confusion in order to undermine the rising profile of the party and its candidate, Edeoga.
“The party had on June 9 elected Agbo its flag-bearer. In line with the Electoral Act 2022, the party decided to have a flag-bearer who will replace Agbo as its main candidate.
“In line with the above, the party fixed dates for substitution of candidates who want to voluntarily withdraw from the race. So, many candidates indicated interest in withdrawing. The party, therefore, wrote to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that there will be substitution primaries to replace Agbo.
“On August 9, 2022, the party at Top 10 Hotel, Golf Estate had its substitution primary which were witnessed by five officials of INEC, two federal party officials from LP office in Abuja, where Edeoga was unanimously elected as the sole candidate for the governorship seat of the party.
“Subsequently, the national chairman issued the candidate certificate of return in line with party policy and the Electoral Act.”
He, therefore, said it was strange to learn that any other person started laying claim to the position of governorship candidacy of our great party.
“I want to allay the fears of the public by stating that there is no way PDP or All Progressives Congress can cause confusion because we have resolved to take Enugu from the ruling PDP which has failed the people.”
