Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Anthonia Ohiwerei-Omiunu, has said President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of more women into his government was commendable and called on state governments to do the same.

Ohiwerei-Omiunu said the government has done well by giving young female aspirants like herself the opportunity to run for the highest office in Edo State.

“This not only demonstrates confidence in women’s capabilities but also serves as a model for other states to emulate. Under the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President and the Renewed Hope Initiative of the first lady, we have seen their passion and dedication to deliver on their mandate. Their leadership and commitment to the well-being of the citizens have been commendable. Their efforts in addressing various challenges and promoting unity across board deserve recognition.

“Visionary decision to make the nomination form free for women is welcomed by all. This gesture reflects a commitment to breaking down financial barriers that often hinder women from participating actively in politics,” she said.

She called on Edo State to include women in top political roles, as it brings diverse perspectives and solutions to the complex challenges faced by the state.

“Women, with their unique experiences, can contribute to more holistic and inclusive policies that address the needs of the entire population.

“Studies consistently show that gender-balanced leadership correlates with better economic performance. Edo State stands to gain from the innovative and strategic thinking that women leaders can bring to economic development initiatives.

“The nature of women in government can be characterised by a range of qualities that they often bring to leadership roles. Women in government often exhibit empathy and a collaborative approach, emphasising the importance of social welfare and community well-being. They tend to prioritise issues such as education, healthcare and family support, reflecting a holistic perspective on governance.

“Additionally, women in government may contribute to a more inclusive decision-making process, fostering diversity of thought and representation. They often work towards breaking down gender stereotypes and promoting equal opportunities for all citizens. Women leaders may also be adept at building consensus and finding diplomatic solutions to complex issues.

“Empowering a woman to assume the role of governor in Edo State for the first time since the creation of the state in 1991, holds significant benefits for inclusive governance and overall societal progress. Firstly, promoting gender equality in political leadership fosters diverse perspectives, contributing to well-rounded decision-making that reflects the needs and aspirations of the entire population.

By providing opportunities for women to become governors, Edo State can inspire positive role models, encouraging more women to engage in politics and public service. This, in turn, helps break down traditional gender stereotypes and promotes a more egalitarian society.”
