Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo said Edo State would build on its historical position in the rubber industry by promoting value addition, industrial development, job creation, and increased economic opportunities for farmers and young people.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Yakubu Musa, Okpebholo stated this at the International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB) Fellowship, Training and International Rubber Conference in Benin City.
He described the conference as an opportunity for international collaboration, knowledge exchange and innovation to unlock the potential of rubber for economic growth and sustainable development.
“Edo State is not a stranger to the global rubber industry. We are its historic home in Nigeria and indeed globally, with an estimated 40,000 hectares of land under rubber cultivation, major estates and thousands of smallholder farmers.”
“Rubber is part of our economic heritage, and we are determined to translate that heritage into renewed hope and prosperity,” the governor added.
He said the state’s ambition was to move beyond raw rubber production to value addition and industrial development, creating more jobs and expanding opportunities for local farmers and young people.
He explained that achieving the goal would require modern research, improved farming practices, sustainable production, private-sector investment and stronger collaboration among government, academia and industry.
