The Edo State Government plans to repair roads and drainage in Benin City’s Government Reserved Area (GRA) after the rainy season to control flooding and ease movement, Governor Monday Okpebholo has said.
Okpebholo disclosed this while receiving the state Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa, and other judges who visited Government House to invite him to activities marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year.
He said the repairs would precede a broader redevelopment, for which three companies had submitted estimates of about N250 billion.
“My administration is working to have a new GRA as I believe the old GRA was not properly planned right from inception.
“I called for proposals and three companies gave me an estimate of about N250 billion. Some houses have to give way, but at the moment we are going to focus on doing some palliative work to control flooding and ease movement in the area,” he said.

The governor said EdoGIS was identifying areas requiring improved infrastructure, including water and electricity.
He commended the judiciary’s cooperation with his administration, particularly through special courts and efforts to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
On judges’ welfare, Okpebholo said the State Executive Council had approved the purchase of replacement vehicles.
“We have gotten approval from the State Executive Council on purchasing vehicles to replace the old ones our judges are using. We are looking at about 33 vehicles which you will get soon,” he said.
Okungbowa praised the governor’s development efforts and cooperation with other arms of government, saying the relationship had contributed to peace in the state.
“We are here on a courtesy visit to invite you to the commencement of the 2026/2027 legal year as our visitation is to inform you of our programme of activities,” he said.
