At least three people were injured and six vehicles were damaged on Sunday in a multiple-vehicle accident involving a 40-foot tanker at Ikpoba Hill in Benin City, Edo State.
The tanker, which was reportedly conveying groundnut oil, allegedly suffered brake failure while descending the hill from the Ikpoba Hill/Ramat Park axis.
An eyewitness, Mr Ken Omusi, said the tanker driver attempted to control the vehicle but lost control after hitting a pothole at the Ikpoba River Bridge.
According to Omusi, the pothole caused the steering wheel to jerk, after which the tanker veered into other vehicles, resulting in a chain collision involving several motorists.
Another eyewitness, Kayode Folorunsho Ogedengbe, said he was at the scene when he heard people shouting and turned to see the tanker crashing into other vehicles.
He said the tanker first hit a Toyota Corolla, which subsequently collided with another vehicle, causing further damage.

Ogedengbe put the number of damaged vehicles at six, including the tanker and an Eco bus.
He said three people were injured in the crash and were rushed to hospital by community members and passers-by. Some of the victims reportedly had to be pulled from beneath the damaged vehicles.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, police and fire service, later arrived at the scene to assist with rescue operations and control the situation.
The accident caused significant disruption along the busy Ikpoba Hill corridor as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene and prevent further danger.
