Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has been charged by the Football Association (FA) over his alleged role in the spying scandal that resulted in the club’s expulsion from last season’s Championship play-offs.
The FA announced on Wednesday that Eckert faces three alleged breaches of FA Rule E3.1, accusing him of misconduct that allegedly brought the game into disrepute by directing or authorising the observation of training sessions held by Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before their respective Championship fixtures against Southampton.
In a statement, the FA said: “Tonda Eckert has been charged with three breaches of FA Rule E3.1 in relation to misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026. It is alleged that the head coach acted in an improper manner and/or brought the game into disrepute by directing and/or authorising the observation of training sessions of Oxford United FC, Ipswich Town FC and Middlesbrough FC.”
The charges follow an independent disciplinary investigation which found that Southampton had admitted spying on rival clubs’ training sessions, including Championship play-off opponents Middlesbrough. Although Southampton defeated Middlesbrough in the semi-finals, the club was subsequently expelled from the play-off final, replaced by Middlesbrough and handed a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season.
The disciplinary panel described the operation as “a contrived and determined plan from the top down”, concluding that the espionage had been authorised by Eckert. It also found that junior members of staff felt “pressurised to do the observations that Eckert and the senior coaches wished them to do.”
Southampton said it would “co-operate fully and openly” with the FA’s latest investigation, adding: “The club remains fully supportive of Tonda and his staff as we work towards our ambition of returning to the Premier League.”
The financial consequences of the scandal have been significant, with Southampton missing out on a play-off final that carried an estimated £200 million windfall through promotion to the Premier League.
Eckert, who acknowledged responsibility for the spying operation in June, has until next Tuesday to respond to the FA charges. Southampton begin their new campaign with a League Cup first-round tie against Colchester on August 8 before opening their Championship season away to Watford on August 16.
