A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Nworie, has accused the state Police Command of watching helplessly as thugs allegedly attacked him, his supporters, and reporters during a PDP rally.
Nworie made the allegation while addressing reporters in Enugu on Thursday.
The former PDP chairman, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly after the 2023 general elections, recently returned to the PDP and was scheduled to be formally received by the party in his ward in Ezza South Local Government Area.
The event, initially billed for the village square in Ikwuator, Idemba Community, was moved to Nworie’s compound after more than 50 thugs allegedly stormed the venue and disrupted the programme.
The thugs, suspected by the PDP to be working for the APC, allegedly destroyed plastic chairs, canopies and other property while attacking people attending the rally.
Nworie said he, his supporters, and reporters covering the event were attacked, while about 10 PDP members sustained injuries.
He further alleged that police officers watched as the thugs attacked party members and destroyed property despite his request for security.
“The police watched as the thugs stormed the venue and attacked me, beat my supporters and disrupted the rally,” he said.

“Instead of the police that I wrote to and notified to provide security for me and other PDP members to protect us, they could provide the needed security. They stood and idled around while we were attacked,” he lamented.
A letter dated 31 July 2026, which Nworie said was sent to the police, stated that he had received threats to his life and requested adequate security for the 1 August event.
However, the Ebonyi State Police Command denied receiving any letter or petition concerning the event or the alleged threats.
In a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the police said, “The command wishes to state unequivocally that no petition relating to any of the alleged attacks has been received by the Ebonyi Police Command.”
Meanwhile, the APC denied involvement in the attack.
The state APC chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, said those uncomfortable with Nworie’s political activities could be responsible.
“There is no time APC will have a hand in violence because you know that if you get into such act, the governor will abandon you,” he said.
