The newly established Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology Oferekpe (UICTO), at the weekend, formally admitted a total of 187 students as its pioneer students through matriculation which took place at the university permanent site in Oferekpe, Izzi Local Government Area of the state.

Addressing the students, parents, guardians, friends and their relatives including governor Francis Nwifuru who attended the event, Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ernest  Egba said the event  marked   defining chapter in the history of the state the unfolding story of technological transformation in the nation.

He explained that the university  was once an idea — a bold and prophetic vision conceived in the mind of governor Nwifuru who he said is convinced that   future belongs to those who master technology, innovation, and digital knowledge.

“Your Excellency understood that the global economy is evolving at a breathtaking speed. Artificial Intelligence, cyber-security, robotics, block chain, data science, cloud computing, digital entrepreneurship — these are no longer distant concepts. They are the engines of modern civilization. And Your Excellency declared that Ebonyi State must not watch from the sidelines. You envisioned an institution that would prepare our youths not merely to seek jobs, but to create industries. Not merely to consume technology, but to design it. Not merely to adapt to the digital world, but to lead it.

“When I was entrusted with the responsibility to translate that vision into visible reality, I accepted the assignment with humility and determination. It was not just a professional duty; it was a generational mandate.

“UICTO was formally established in December 2021. At that time, it existed primarily as a dream supported by documentation, strategic planning, and unwavering belief. The journey from conception to realization was not without challenges. Every new institution faces skepticism. Every bold initiative faces obstacles. But vision backed by leadership and faith always prevails.

“In January 2025, the University was granted its operational licence by the National Universities Commission (NUC). That moment was historic. It signified national validation. It affirmed that our academic structure, staffing framework, governance systems, and infrastructural readiness met the standards required to operate as a university.

“In August 2025, UICTO commenced real academic activities. From vision in 2021…… To licensing in 2025…… To academic operations in the same year…… This is the story of focused leadership and purposeful governance.

“Today, UICTO has enrolled 187 students across 20 academic Departments. One hundred and eighty- seven young minds. Twenty Departments of innovation and discovery. One growing institution with limitless potential.

“We did not rush growth for the sake of numbers. We built strategically. We built with structure. We built with sustainability in mind. Each of the 20 Departments represents a pillar of the digital future. Each student represents possibility. Each classroom session represents preparation for global relevance. These 187 students are not just undergraduates. They are the first wave of digital pioneers who will shape the identity of this university for generations.

“Though young in years, UICTO has recorded commendable milestones: Structured and operationalized 20 Departments aligned with global technological trends, successfully engaged qualified academic and non-academic staff, Established governance and administrative systems that promote transparency and efficiency, Designed NUC-compliant curricula tailored to modern technological demands, Developed operational frameworks for student discipline and academic excellence, Positioned the University for transition to its permanent site”, he told the gathering..

Visitor to the university, governor Francis Nwifuru said  the institution was originally conceived as a specialized institution, which enables the students on graduation to be job creators through innovation and technology, rather than being job seekers in the already saturated job markets.

He disclosed that the curriculum being taught was strictly tailored towards strategic outcomes through modular systems, rather than mere conventional teaching and learning modes.

“In our manifesto, we emphasised entrepreneurship, skill acquisition and education for economic self- liance at all levels. The reason is not far-fetched. The rate of unemployment is troubling and only entrepreneurship education can empower our young people to be self-employed and create their own job opportunities.

“This form of education which is the reason behind the establishment of this noble institution, will produce graduates who will think outside the box and provide innovative solutions to the problem. However, when you bend down to take advantage of this our vision, you will definitely acquire relevant skills and knowledge that will help you and your families out of poverty”, he stated.

He implored the students focus on their studies and shun all forms of distractions to make the state and their parents proud.

“And so my dear matriculating students, today you formally become part of this historic institution, you are not just the first set of students, you are pioneers. I don't jealous you because God gave you the opportunity to pioneer knowledge here. It means your names will be canonized and engraved in a plaque that will be gummed at the Senate Building. Congratulations. The history of this university will always mention you as the foundation upon which future generations will stand and because of that, much is expected from you.

“Always remember that this university stands on land that was sacrificed for the sake of knowledge. Therefore, you must justify that sacrifice through discipline, dedication, and excellence. Strive to be good ambassadors of this great institution wherever you go. Shun cultism, violence, and all forms of antisocial behaviour that destroy lives and derail destinies. Universities are places of learning, innovation, character formation, and leadership development, not environments for negative influences. It is a higher institution for high flyers, not higher fools. Your time here should prepare you to become responsible citizens who will contribute positively to society”
