The Ebonyi Civil Society Coalition Group has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Ebonyi State of poor performance, alleging that its record in office is responsible for growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.
Charles Otu, spokesperson for the coalition, made the allegation while speaking on Arise News on Thursday, saying the recent actions and statements by APC members reflected what he described as political desperation.
According to Otu, civil society organisations in the state had reviewed the APC government’s performance and concluded that its scorecard was “abysmal”.
He said the situation was becoming more evident in the conduct of political actors, including what he described as threats from a local government chairman.
“The recent threat by an LGA chairman in Ebonyi is already being carried out. The governor of Ebonyi State is even more jittery than the opposition candidates,” Otu said.
The coalition spokesperson also criticised Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration over what he described as excessive family influence on governance and inadequate investment in key sectors, particularly healthcare and education.
“Gov. Nwifuru is the only governor in Nigeria with up to 109 direct siblings, and the sheer weight of the family is affecting governance in Ebonyi,” Otu alleged.
He further claimed that Ebonyi’s health spending was inadequate, saying, “This is the only state that has spent less than ₦400 per capita on health.”

Otu also questioned the priorities of the state government’s proposed University of ICT, alleging that staff accommodation was commissioned before the institution’s academic facilities.
“We have a governor building a University of ICT, yet the first thing commissioned was the staff quarters, not the academic facilities themselves. Meanwhile, the state-owned university remains comatose,” he said.
However, Otu acknowledged what he described as a positive aspect of the governor’s administration, particularly its scholarship programme.
“One area where the governor deserves credit is the award of scholarships,” he said.
He, however, alleged that civil society organisations that examined the list of beneficiaries found that many were children of prominent individuals rather than students selected strictly on merit.
Otu’s comments come amid growing political activity in Ebonyi as parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
The coalition called for greater accountability, transparency and issue-based political engagement, while urging the state government to focus on improving governance and the welfare of residents.
